- Decreased lipid peroxidation – The antioxidants help protect lipids from the effects of free radicals, which results in less cellular damage in the heart.
- Increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) – HDL is the “good” cholesterol that helps remove the “bad” cholesterol from your system.
- Decrease release of proteases – Proteases are enzymes which break down proteins and peptides. Researchers link an increase in protease activity to various cardiac problems and diseases.
- Inhibits platelet aggregation – Platelet aggregation refers to platelets clumping together to form blood clots. It has been found that blood clots can cause serious cardiac problems such as heart attacks or strokes.
- Widens the endothelium – The endothelium is the innermost layer of the blood vessel. Some research suggests patients with heart failure have a narrower endothelium.

A 2012 study shows evidence of red wine’s protective effects against colon cancer. Mediterranean men who drank a moderate amount (12-35 grams) of red wine each day were found to be less at risk of developing colon cancer.
These protective effects are also evident in patients with colon cancer. Another study from 2016 shows that colon cancer patients who are mild to moderate red wine drinkers had a longer overall survival rate, disease-free survival rate, and time-to-recurrence period.
One study shows that postmenopausal women who drank red wine had less breast density over women who drank other types of alcoholic beverages. According to the NCI, denser breasts are a risk factor for breast cancer.
