Benefits of Drinking Organic Coconut Water

1. Can Give You Clearer Skin

Many know organic coconut water to have a sweet nutty taste, but aside from this, what else do they really know about this naturally refreshing drink? For one, it is 94% water and fairly low in calories.

Coconut water is also rich in nutrients, an excellent source of B-complex vitamins, and has high levels of potassium. Potassium aids in hydration and calcium, promoting skin moisturization and renewal, and giving it a plump and youthful look.

This drink may help fight acne, acting as a detoxifier, an anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial agent,  reducing excess oils on skin that can cause breakouts. The vitamins in this organic beverage have also been shown to contain anti-aging properties that allow the skin to repair and restore itself more effectively.

With the presence of vitamin C in organic coconut water, it is believed to help protect against and repair sun damage.

2. May Support Heart Health

Using coconut water to support good heart health

Organic coconut water contains the perfect composition of minerals that show promising results for improved heart health. It is rich in electrolytes, which are responsible for the signaling of the heart.

Because it boasts 15 times more potassium than regular sports drinks, some benefits of coconut water include regulating the heart muscles more actively and reducing the risk of blood clots. These could have promising implications in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Coconut water also helps decrease total cholesterol triglyceride levels and LDL cholesterol, possibly decreasing chances of a heart attack. If an attack did occur, the additional benefits of this water are believed by researchers to aid in faster recovery due to the presence of potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the water.

Many pieces of research done on rats with organic coconut water have shown its efficacy as up-regulating the good lipid, like HDL, and inhibiting the bad lipids, like triglycerides and VDL. While it may offer promising results for heart health, it is always better to consult your doctor first before drinking organic coconut water if you already have a pre-existing heart condition.

3. May Help Reduce Blood Pressure

On the list of home remedies for blood pressure, organic coconut water finds itself high up. Due to the adequate supply of minerals and salts it contains, modern researchers have found it helpful in countering the imbalance in our bodies.

Because potassium plays a significant role in reducing blood pressure, it balances out the level of sodium in the blood that keeps the body from properly functioning. According to Bel Marra Health, one study reported in “The West Indian Medical Journal” noted the reduction in systolic pressure in 71% in participants and reduction in diastolic pressure by 29% because of the consumption of coconut water.

Another group within the study received a combination of organic coconut water and mauby, which is another tropical drink. The result was a reduction in systolic pressure of 43% and a reduction in diastolic pressure of 57%.

This relatively high level of potassium has gotten the attention of many researchers for its possible application as a hypertension treatment. Because potassium, both as a supplement and food component, is known to decrease blood pressure, the potassium behind coconut water is believed to function much like any other food that contains this mineral.

Although the results are promising, more studies continue to be conducted to ascertain the drink’s efficacy in lowering blood pressure. Researchers agree that more randomized trials are needed with larger numbers of subjects to ensure there is sufficient evidence of organic coconut water being effective in treating high blood pressure.

A 1-cup serving of this beverage has around 45 calories, which is preferable compared to the high-calorie counts of most flavored waters or beverages.  But even if it is low in calories, it does contain sugar, with around 6 grams per 1-cup serving.

It is then important to ensure that your diet isn’t high in sugar, which can result in weight gain. While the sugars contained in coconut water are natural, some commercially-produced ones may include added sugars. This is why it’s important to check the label of your organic coconut water to make sure no sugar was added in processing.

The American Heart Association suggests limiting your total calorie intake per day from added sugar. For women, it is a maximum of 100 and for men, 150.

It is also important to note that organic coconut water does contain fat, which is a little under 0.5 grams a cup. However, 88% of its total fat content is saturated fat.

Fat intake should be limited to 5 to 6% of your total calories a day, according to the American Heart Association. Even if coconut water only provides around 4% of the total saturated fat recommendation, it is still a high intake for a serving size that’s small.

So, while it is low in calories, it is still important to look after your diet and food intake.

5. May Help Control Blood Sugar

One of the many health benefits of organic coconut water is its ability to restore electrolyte balance because of potassium and sodium. But did you know that it may also help manage diabetes?

New Delhi Television reports that a study published in the “Journal of Medicinal Food” stated coconut water’s efficacy in managing sugar levels. Because it is a great alternative to fruit juices and aerated drinks that are usually filled with toxic sugar, its high potassium content can be good and healing for diabetics.

Because it has natural sugars, blood sugar levels do not spike up instantly. And without the presence of preservatives, diabetics are spared from the harmful health hazards they are prone to such as weight gain and glucose overproduction.

Anything taken in moderation isn’t harmful, but it is always best to consult with a professional before consuming anything, especially if you have a serious health condition that needs to be addressed. Organic coconut water is a tasty drink that can help keep you hydrated and healthy, but it’s best to ask your doctor about it before adding it to your daily diet.
